Indonesian terrorist suspect captured in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysian police announced Friday the arrest of an Indonesian terrorist suspect who was hunted for a "long time," and said he would be detained under a strict security law pending deportation.

Malaysian national police chief Ismail Omar said the arrest — one of several recently — showed the successful co-operation between the two countries, rather than a new terror threat.

Terrorism is "under control" in the region, Ismail told reporters after a meeting with the visiting Indonesian national police chief, Timur Pradopo.

The arrest of Fadli Sadama was not a sign of a new terror cell, Ismail said, adding "we have been looking for the suspect for a long time."

He said Fadli was being held under the Internal Security Act, which allows indefinite detention without trial of people considered security threats. Fadli will be deported as soon as possible, he said.

Ismail did not give further details. The Star daily reported earlier that Fadli, 27, was arrested Oct. 13 on a bus on his way to southern Johor state with two revolvers.

Quoting an unidentified counterterrorism official, the paper said Fadli allegedly planned to attack a prison in Indonesia holding a convicted terrorist. Fadli is also suspected of involvement in a bank robbery on Indonesia's Sumatra island.

Since early this year, Malaysia has detained several people allegedly linked to militants in Indonesia.

Over the past decade, more than 100 militant suspects have been detained in Malaysia without trial. Most have been released after allegedly renouncing extremist beliefs.
