LONDON (AFP) – Police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder Monday over a fire extinguisher thrown off a roof during last week's student protest at Prime Minister David Cameron's party headquarters.

The 18-year-old student, who was apprehended in Hampshire, is suspected of throwing the object from the eight-storey London building which serves as the headquarters of the Conservative party.

The extinguisher narrowly missed officers below as they sought to restore order outside the front of the building.

An estimated 50,000 students descended on London last Wednesday to demonstrate against a threefold hike in tuition fees. The protest turned violent when a group overpowered a police line to break into the office block. "An 18-year-old man attended Totton police station in Hampshire," said a statement from London police.

"This arrest follows an investigation into the incident where a fire extinguisher was thrown from the roof of Millbank Tower."

Police have already arrested 57 people in connection with the disturbances.

The latest arrest came after new footage capturing the incident was shown on television.

The man has been transported to London for further questioning on Tuesday.
